The man who impressed me with his presentation, the very first day in IFMR, during my interview had a session today. Prof Bala was to decipher the Capital markets to us laymans. A soft spoken, person who looks learned and wise. When he talks, you immediately get the impression that he knows deep about what he is talking about. The session was without a power point but everyone were quite attentive. He spoke on variety of instruments like shares, debentures, derivatives, bonds and other assets. And when he began trading, there was one simple message, money is wasted if not invested specially in Trading. He made even a conservative and a Risk fearing person like me, give a second thought on Trading.
Next on was the President of IFMR, Prof Krishnan. He was to tell us about Management education but it was one of the most weird and disappointing sessions I had attended. He had supposedly prepared for this session he was going to take and by preparation, he wrote the points on MS Word! The whole session was scrolling down a document of Bold points! According to me, anything less than a Powerpoint is un-prepared and I learnt how bad it is to teach on MS Word. The other half of the session was bragging about himself and IIM Ahmedabad and teaching us about Visions and Missions of IFMR. One of the visions read to be in the top 10 schools in India and for that he gave up to the obvious choice of IIM Ahmedabad just because he was an alumni. From his words, I got 'unfortunate' that English was the language used in placements. This was coming from a person who was about to teach Written Communication in English. Well, guess we just have to ignore his tongue and do our "bloody job of learning" (Another phrase from his session).
The third and final session was on Case learning by Prof Padhu. The funniest professor I have seen here till now. After reading through the case, we had brainstorm of what its about. He had a good way of controlling a ruckus and listened to everyone one by one. Then we had to guess the main problem in the case which no one seem to get it. and finally solution to the main problem identified by Gayatri, was individual perspectives. The main thing to look out for while dealing cases was to be patient, hear out everyone, get the inflow of thought, process it, keep questioning your answers and finally attend to all the facts before reaching the solution. It was a good session with a lot of interaction from everyone and got to learn some important concepts. In addition, Prof Padhu is a really funny guy and I look forward to his sessions again.
Among other things, I finally got the wifi receiver in my laptop corrected! So yes after 6 days without a wifi in the laptop, I can finally access the internet from the room! Probably one of the happiest moment of today for me. Oh and I also did 6 kms of recovery run today morning to spit out the lactate from the system. The surroundings were awesome and it was such a bliss to run. One more day to get my cycle, yaay!
