And so the professors started coming in. It was a day when they introduce themselves and the subjects they were going to teach in the upcoming months and what all to expect. The first session for the day was by Sharon on IFMR LEAD, i.e. all the research activities going on at IFMR. Since I have a background in Biotechnology, one look at someone who has worked hard on a research and is proud and happy of it and I can identify them. She was so so enthusiastic when she spoke that it seemed the research activities was not only what she did but also her life. She started off talking about India and how the research at IFMR lead tackles major research problems here. She gave us two examples based on Mobile phone usage among the farmers and Banking sector for Loan reminder calls. Both those examples had data that had been collected over a wide range of population and also involving many IFMR field agents. I was baffled by the work that is done for research in fields of Finance! Although the results did not have any 'Awe' or 'Ohh' in the faces of the students but it sure gave us an overview of how much time and effort has been put in. I also learnt that the people involved in research and we were in a seperate track of Business school but quite a lot of research from these people also helps us in the studies.
Second up was Vishwanathan Sir to introduce us to Marketing. The years of experience was all over his face and his presentation just proved it. We were all the blind men who though Marketing was selling a product. He explained to us things such as Porter's 5 forces and 4 Ps of marketing which broadens the areas that marketing is involved in. Since he is an economics heavy person, there were a few instances though when his jargon was on top of us engineers and hopefully the classes turn out to be clearer. He was bombarded with a lot of questions which he answered proficiently. Most of them were related to the false sense of marketing that we had and most of his answers were to look at all the 4 Ps. About his personal life, he told us that he started with Blue star from 1979 whereas my dad started with the same company at 1976! So it is quite likely that they know each other. Also in one of his many listings, he also worked for Ti Cycles which has got its mention twice in 3 days! Now that is definately some superstition for me!
After a delayed but a delicious lunch, it was Prof Raghu introducing the Learning and its types. He was the best teacher in IFMR. With 17 years of teaching history in IFMR, he certainly knew how to handle the 180 of us. His signature way of talking is in a slow manner giving emphasis on words and even a illiterate will understand his english. A dynamic connector with students, I am sure he would've faced almost all the students eye to eye atleast once during the session. He started off defining learning and moving on to Potlov's dogs, A mice that presses a button for cheese and the managers that continously learn based on experience. He started his session with a graveyard shift 2-3 pm, but this was the session we were the most active throughout the day. Unfortunately his class was just half an hour long and he skipped a few slides. I am looking forward to Tuesday when he will take his first class.
Finally it was time for us to be Emotionally mature. Prof Vijayalakshmi who was supposed to come tommorow, preponed her self learning session. It was all about Emotional intelligence and its development. The process involved working towards the welfare of the self and others. I the learnt the four main aspects in it, self realization, self management, social, empathy. There was also a small handout where we had to think about our experiences in childhood, achievements, strengths, weaknesses etc which gave us some insight on the introspection to spend 15 minutes to look at our own life and memories in the past. Though I didnt quite understand as why we were doing it, but it is always fun for me to write abotu myself. Also we were sharing some experiences with others and got to know some really funny ones. It all boils down to the person and what is important for him/her. Anyways, the topic was moving too much towards human psychology and we were free for the day by 4 pm.
Now in the desert, people really tend to get jobless. and by jobless I mean really jobless. Some tend to reciprocate their chores at home at that time, some form groups and walk towards the horizons and some go back to the ship and sink themselves in the bed. I was doing some work and the Tamil people called me up for an introduction and in a Tamilian group. Since I was the product of both worlds, I had to go. I don't quite understand though that why do people initially begin with the language and culture while forming groups and not be Open to new people around. Anyways, since I was a hybrid here, I had to bear with their session and quietly exited the group and continued my work. only to find my luck that the wifi was not working. Disappointed and jobless, I returned back to my room and enjoyed the only fruitful moment of the day, the Sunset. watching the Sunset through the window of my room with a tea and a Laptop, peacefully I sign out for today!
